Bio

Exie Pauline Davis, 90, of Marietta, OK was born November 10, 1919 in Paris, TX, the third of nine children of Waite Avil and Leta Myrtle Powell Henderson. She passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2010 in the Lake Country Nursing Center, Marietta. At age two, Exie contracted polio and on her 16th birthday had corrective surgery on both feet. While working as a riveter in an airplane factory in Tulsa, OK during World War II, she met Lester A. Davis. They were married on March 14, 1942 in Ardmore, OK, and he preceded her in death on May 24, 1988. Mrs. Davis grew up with a love of flowers and continued to work her flower beds until April 29 of this year when she fell at WinStar Hotel where she was to attend an RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) Banquet. As a volunteer(dipping food and wrapping silverware), she had been associated with the Senior Nutrition Program for 25 years and followed it through three moves. "I have to go feed the old people" was told to anyone around her near lunch time. She had also served on the RSVP Board many of those years. Mrs. Davis was an active member of many clubs, scouts and events over the years. The First United Methodist Church was where she placed her faith. Nieces and nephews became hers as her sisters and brothers died. In-laws remained even after their family ties went away. Everyone loved her. She never met a stranger and always did whatever she could to help. She did a wide variety of crafts. Among her last big sewing project was a king-size hand quilted Dutch Doll quilt, the sale of which helped to send her oldest great-grandson, Steffon Kershner, to the Mediterranean as a youth ambassador. Mrs. Davis also did ceramics for many years. In 2009 she began watercolor painting under John White at the Goddard Center and finished her last work in March 2010 at age 90. Mrs. Davis also collected toothpick holders, salt and pepper shakers, dolls and angels. Her hat collection reached over 200 with every kind imaginable. She had all colors, imitation snakeskin, cowhide, skunk, tiger, razorback pig, plus her fancy ones with flowers, feathers, etc. She was never seen without one, but her cowboy hats were her favorite, especially the pink OU one and her red ones. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Fritz, Ivan and Louis Henderson; and three sisters, Ida, Myrene and Montie Lee. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Terry Louis and Debbie Davis of Gilmer, TX; daughter, Exie Lee Grice of Marietta; four grandchildren, Grace Kershner, Stephen Davis, Megan Davis Adams and Brett Davis; three great-grandchildren, Steffon, Justin and Trysta Kershner; sister and brother-in-law, Lou and Jack Vandeventer of Lone Grove, OK; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Beverly Henderson of Marietta; and her special friend of many years, Truman Hallum, also of Marietta. Thank you to Dr. Tom O'Connor for all of your work and the time spent taking care of our mother setback after setback. Our family has gained a new respect for the workers at the hospitals, rehabs, nursing home and hospice. We are lucky to have these wonderful people in Love County . . . Many Thanks. ** Accepted from SAC: Birth Location Death Location Link to parents Link to spouse Year of marriage Suggested By: Tina (Wikle) Geurin, 13 Mar 2019
