From "Aurora News-Register", Aurora, Nebraska dated Friday, January 2, 1948, Page 1: Lifelong Resident of County Passes Christmas Eve – Rites Monday Mrs. Jacob Nickolaus, 66, died unexpectedly at her home in Stockham on Christmas eve. She had been in frail health for some time. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Stockham on Monday afternoon, with Rev. Elsie Danskin in charge. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Tucker sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "Home, Heavenly Home." Mrs. Don Traudt accompanied at the piano. Matilda Nickolaus, daughter of Roseanna and Christian George, was born near Hampton, Nebr., on Feb. 4, 1881, and departed from this earth at her home in Stockham on Dec. 24th at the age of 66 years. She accepted her Christ at an early age and was a faithful follower all of her life. She was united in marriage to Jacob Nickolaus on Jan. 26, 1903. To this union six children were born: Ella Rollo and Arno of Almont, Mich., Harold of Lompoe, Calif., Emil of Twin Falls, Ida., Eldon of Hampton and Harlan of Stockham. She lived on a farm northeast of Stockham until her husband's death Nov. 3, 1941. From that time until the spring of 1947 she visited her children and their families, and then moved to Stockham. She was a member of the German Methodist church south of Hampton and later of the Methodist church in Stockham where she was a faithful worker in both the Ladies Aid and the church. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Jacob and Peter. Those left to mourn her passing are her six children: five brothers, John George of Goodland, Kas., Paul George of Eugene Ore., Carl George of Stockham, Gus George of Erickson, and Ernest of Loveland, Colo.; two sisters, Lydia Beard of Hampton and Rose Frye of Aurora; 11 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and friends. Her hands were never idle Her feet were never still For she was ever ready Some small place to fill. Her mind was ever planning On some good thing to do For those she loved so dearly For those she loved so true. Oh God may we, her children, Follow Thee with steps as sure As those of our loving Mother Whose sweet spirit lingers near.
