John W Mintun, son of Jacob Mintun and Phebe Ann (Lamb) Mintun. ------------- From "Aurora News-Register", Aurora, Nebraska dated Friday, June 18 1948, Page 7: John Mintun, 87, Former County Commissioner, Dies John W. Mintun, pioneer resident of the Stockham community, passed away at Hastings Thursday, June 10, after several years of failing health. For over 16 years he served as superintendent of the County Farm and then moved to a farm near Stockham where he lived until 1943. He served as county commissioner for eight years, from 1915 to 1923. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church in Stockham with Dr. Paul Porter in charge. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Tucker, accompanied by Mrs. Don Traudt at the piano, sang "Rock of Ages," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Home, Heavenly Home." John W. Mintun, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Mintun, was born at Harrison, Ia., March 14, 1861, and passed away at Hastings, Nebr., June 10, 1948, at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 27 days. Mr. Mintun came as a young man to Hamilton county and settled in the Stockham community. On March 15, 1881, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Summers at Hampton, Nebr. This union was blessed with nine children. Mr. and Mrs. Mintun spent most of their married life on the farm. For 16 ½ years they faithfully operated the County Farm, and then moved to a farm ¼ mile west of Stockham, where they lived until moving to Stockham in 1943. He also served three years as county commissioner. At an early age Mr. Mintun united with the church of the Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away April 30, 1944, and by one son, John Elmer. He is survived by his eight children, Mrs. Frank Swearingen of Emmet, Ida., Mrs. Andrew Jensen and Mrs. George Cameron of Stockham, Roy of Wendell, Ida., Mrs. Enos Beat of Springfield, Ore., Mrs. Harvey Beat of Jerome, Ida., Charles R. of Pocatello, Ida., and George W. of Kearney, Nebr.; two brothers, Frank and George of Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Ida Carter of Vancouver, Wash.; 30 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and many neighbors and friends. Pallbearers were: Abe Hoffarber, Clayton Briggs, Lester Beat, Tom Nickle, Ray Beacom and Paul Loomis. Interment was in the Stockham cemetery.
