Bio

At the time of his death Jesse S. Harris was a retired building contractor. After graduating from high school in El Dorado, Arkansas, Jesse entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. After serving in Japan and Korea, he left the Army in 1950. He and his wife, Mary Evelyn, moved to Austin, Texas, where he earned a Master of Business Administration in Management at the University of Texas. They then moved to Dallas. After holding the position of vice-president of construction for Fox & Jacobs, he formed Jesse Harris Construction Company in 1962. The company primarily built multifamily housing, but also did single-family and small commercial construction throughout Texas. For many years Jesse volunteered much time to the homebuilding industry. He was a frequent lecturer on apartment construction at national and regional conventions. In 1979 Governor William P. Clements, Jr. appointed him to the Board of Regents of Texas State Technical Institute for a six-year term. In 1980 Jesse was the recipient of the Hugh Prather Award given by the Home and Apartment Builders of Metropolitan Dallas to the "Builder or Developer who during the past year has done the most for the betterment of his community." In 1987 Jesse was appointed to a second six-year term on the Board of Regents of Texas State Technical Institute.
