The Winfield Daily Free Press Winfield, Kansas Friday, July 11, 1913 page 1 Santa Fe Train Kills Udall Man Alvin O. Barge Was Struck Yesterday By Number 115, Just North Of His Home. Mother will Likely Sue Engineer Say He Whistled for Dead Man but That He Did Not Stir From Track - Barge Was Hard of Hearing. South-bound Santa Fe passenger train, number 115, due in Winfield at 4:40 p.m., struck Alvin Otis Barge, who lives in Udall, while he was walking on the track two miles north of Udall yesterday afternoon and killed him instantly. Mr. Barge had been in the country north of Udall, and had secured a place with a farmer to work on his farm. He was walking back to Udall when he was overtaken by the afternoon passenger and killed. An inquest was held this morning by County Coroner Marsh, who was called to the scene of the accident last night. The engine crew of number 115 were secured for the inquest this morning. The engineer testified that they saw the man, and that they whistled several times but that the man did not turn around. The slowed down and continued whistling, expecting him to step off. Seeing that the engine would strike him, the engineer applied the brakes, but had not checked the speed of the train very greatly. The man was dead when picked up. His body was placed in the baggage car and taken on into Udall. The body was badly bruised and many bones were broken. The dead man was 31 years of age and was the sole support of his widowed mother, his father having died two years ago. He was Simeon Barge. A sister died a year ago. The funeral services were held this afternoon at Udall by Rev. W.C. Timmons, former Methodist pastor there. The dead man was hard of hearing, according to J.E. Davenport of this city, who knew him well. He believes that this was the cause of the killing. There is no curve at the place of the accident. It is understood that the mother of the dead man, Mrs. Mary E. Barge will enter suit against the Santa Fe. She is 57 years of age. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield) ∼ Alvin was the son of Simeon and Mary E WILLIS Barce.
