"The LaFayette Sun" - April 7, 1920: Death of Mrs. Ann M. Rowland. After many months of declining heath, Mrs. Ann M. Rowland died at her home four miles north of LaFayette at 3:00 o'clock last Sunday morning. The deceased was born in Virginia, where her mother was visiting relatives, May 5, 1832, and was brought back to her father's home at Fredonia an infant in arms, and spent all her life in Chambers County. She was before her marriage, Miss Ann M. Hill, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gipson Hill. She was married to Mr. Peter M. Rowland on January 13, 1857, and was the mother of ten children, seven of whom survive her: Miss Virginia Rowland and Mrs. Mattie Farr, who live at the old home place; Mrs. Mary Smith, Rule, Texas; Mr. R. G. Rowland, Ashland; Mrs. Maggie Lindsey, Haskell, Texas, Mrs. Alice McClendon, Langdale, and Mr. S. J. Rowland, Phoenix, Arizona. These were all present at the funeral except for Mr. S. J. Rowland. Mrs. Rowland raised three step-children: Mrs. D. H. B. Abernathy, of Buffalo Route 1, Mrs. J. M. Slaughter, of Ashford, Ala., and Mr. H. W. Rowland, of Arkansas. She leaves thirty-six grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Besides the immediate family bereaved by her death, the deceased had many other relatives and a host of friends. In 1855, Mrs. Rowland joined the Baptist Church at Fredonia and during all her life was a consistent and devoted Christian. Funeral services were held at Rock Spring Baptist Church on last Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. C. Yeargan. After an impressive talk by the pastor, Dr. W. C. Bledsoe, an old friend of the family and for a long time the pastor of the deceased, paid a well deserved tribute to the memory of his venerable friend. A large congregation attended the service, giving evidence of the high esteem in which Mrs. Rowland was held. The pall bearers were Hardy Rowland, Gaines McClendon, L. Abernathy, Sam Abernathy, Woodson McClendon and C. C. Farr, four grandsons and two sons-in-law. Interment was in the Rock Spring Cemetery. =========== Chambers County Marriage Record Book 5 Page 397a: Peter M. Rowland and Ann Hill on January 13, 1857, by D.H. McCoy, MG, at the residence of G.F. The young people of Chiggerville had the pleasure of attending a Christmas tree, on last Wednesday night at the hospitable home of Mrs. A. M. Rowland. Whenever a social entertainment of any kind is announced to take place at Mrs. Rowland's, that is sufficient guarantee of unbounded success. So on the above named date and place, the young, old and all sizes and ages met and greeted one of the most artistically decorated Christmas trees ever erected in this section. The presents were numerous, valuable, pretty and appropriate. ========== "The LaFayette Sun" - May 19, 1915: Birthday Party. Last Wednesday, May 5th, Mrs. A. M. Rowland celebrated her eighty-third birthday. There were quite a number of relatives and grandchildren present, but only three of her own children near enough to be there. But to those in this state, and in the far West, when you read these lines in "our dear home paper" you may remember that "you were absent but not forgotten." What a pleasure and sweet privilege it is to meet with her annually on this occasion. And notwithstanding her age, she is as jolly as can be, is her own hostess and helps to plan and prepare the sumptuous meal that always crowns the noonday hour. Her eyesight is fairly good, health is fine, and except her hearing, she grows younger as she grows old. The day was most pleasantly spent, and each individual left feeling better for having spent one more day with her, and being all together. We trust that the all-wise God who has watched over her and blessed her all these years will still care for her and spare her to celebrate many more happy birthdays. – Ina (Abernathy Smith) ========== "The LaFayette Sun" - October 12, 1921: Estate of Ann M.
