Bio

Notes: "FRANK CERNOHLAVEK FAMILY My grandfather, Frank Cernohlavek, born August 4, 1862 in Visnov, Czechoslovakia, the son of Mathew and Josephine (Posvar) Cernohlavek, came with his family and settled in Elk Precinct. On November 27, 1888, he married Katherina Matejka, daughter of Jacob (#107275607) and Rosalie (Jirovsky) [#107275626] Matejka. My grandmother was born April 21, 1867 in Kouty, Czechoslovakia. They were married at Plasi the same day his half-sister, Josephine, married John Matejka, brother of Katherina. To Frank and Katherina were born 13 children: Anna, married to James Proskovec; Emma, married to Joseph Smaus; Bessie, married to Paul Zavodny; Frank, married to Josie Vavra; Hedvicka, married to John Sedlacek; Emanuel; Alois, who died at about 1 year of age; Stanley, married to Rose Slossar; Emil, wed to Kristina Osmera; Helen, married to Henry Sobolik; Anton, born and died same day; Anton, married to Antonia Vanek; and Rudolph. Still living are Bessie, Emil, and Helen in Butler County; Stanley in Saunders County. Frank was a farmer as were his father and grandfather. Frank died in 1933 on his farm about two miles north of the original homeplace. Activities enjoyed by the family were reading, singing, and Grandpa teaching some to play the button accordion. Katherina was a small woman that enjoyed her family, baking and cooking. Some of her recipes are still enjoyed by her family, down to her great, great-grandchildren. One of the favorites is "cabbage pancakes," always served with vegetable soup. Some memories of Frank and Katherina's children are: On Christmas Eve, each of the children put a plate on the dining room table, and Christmas morning they arose to find goodies on their plates, fasting and abstinence the day before Christmas was encouraged so they could see the "Golden Pig", which never seemed to materialize. When Frank built a new barn on the home place, a barn dance was enjoyed by all before the barn was put to use. Grandma Katherina continued to live on the farm with her two sons, Emanuel and Rudy, until about 1947 when they moved to Bruno. Grandma died January 22, 1955. By Rita Polak." Frank Cernohlavek, who owns an excellently improved farm on section 28, Elk township, is one of the good citizens that Moravia has given to Saunders county. His birth occurred on the 4th of August, 1862, and he is a son of Matthew and Antonia Cernohlavek, who in 1881 came with their family to this country and settled in Elk precinct, Saunders county, Nebraska, where the father homesteaded land. Frank Cernohlavek received his education in his native land and lived there until he was nineteen years of age. Following the removal of the family to this county he assisted his father with the work of the homestead for a number of years. Subsequently he began farming independently and now owns two hundred and forty acres of excellent land on section 28, Elk township. The buildings upon the farm are commodious and well designed and everything is kept in excellent condition, which adds much to the attractiveness of the place. He grows the crops best adapted to soil and climate and also raises stock, especially hogs. He is enterprising and up-to-date, and his land returns him a good income. On November 27, 1888, Mr. Cernohlavek was united in marriage to Miss Katie Matejka, a daughter of Jacob and Rosa Matejka, early settlers of this county. Mr. and Mrs. Cernohlavek have eleven children: Anna, who married James Proskovec, of Butler county; Emma, now Mrs. Joseph Smous, of Saunders county; Bessie, who is the wife of Paul Zavodny, of Butler county, this state; and Frank, Edna, Eman, Stanislaw, Emil, Helen, Anton and Rudolph, all at home. Mr. Cernohlavek is independent in the exercise of his political franchise, following his judgment rather than obeying the dictates of a party leader. He is now serving as school trustee and is proving capable and conscientious in that capacity. His religious allegiance is given to the Catholic church, to the support of which he contributes. He is not only an excellent farmer but is also a public spirited citizen and a man of unquestioned integrity, and his friends are many.
