Memorial services will be Held Today for Ervin Willenborg, Lost in Typhoon Memorial services will be held this morning, March 9, at 9 o'clock at St. Martin Church for Seaman First Class Ervin E. Willenborg, son of Mrs. Annie Willenborg of near Tours, who was reported missing since December 18 and is now assumed to be lost by the war department. "The Navy Department," the message relayed, "deeply regrets to inform you that a careful review of all facts available relating to the disappearance of your son, Ervin E. Willenborg, previously missing, leads to the conclusion that there is no hope for his survival and that he lost his life as a result of ship disaster during the typhoon on December 18, 1944, while in the service of his country. If additional information is received, it will be forwarded to you promptly. Sincere sympathy is extended to you in your great sorrow." Seaman Willenborg entered the Navy on October 21, 1943. After finishing basic training at San Diego, he was given a short leave and then attached to the Monoyham. He came to West and Tours in September, 1944, for a ten-day leave and returned to Washington for duty on the same ship. During that time he had accumulated seven battle stars among them being Saipan and Guam campaigns. The West News, March 9, 1945 Note: Ervin Ernest Willenborg was lost in a typhoon on December 18, 1944, in the Western Pacific during WW II. Three ships were lost in this typhoon. 1) The 2,100 ton Spence; 24 survivors from more than 300 officers and enlisted men. 2) The 1,395 ton Hull; 54 saved from 250. 3) The 1,395 ton Monaghan, blooded at Pear Harbor, veteran of the Aleutians and Marianas; only six survived from 250.
