Bio

CENOTAPH - In memory of Ervin Ernest Willenborg - Lost in typhoon in Western Pacific WW II - Lost at sea when the USS Monaghan went down during Typhoon Cobra, 239 lives lost. The destroyer USS Monaghan (DD-354) sank during Typhoon Cobra on December 18, 1944, along with two other destroyers, USS Hull and USS Spence. The typhoon, also known as the Great Typhoon of 1944, hit Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet east of the Philippines and claimed the lives of over 790 sailors in total. The disaster highlighted a critical need for improved weather forecasting and fleet training in heavy weather operations. The storm hit as the fleet was trying to refuel, and the intense winds and high seas led to the ships capsizing. The typhoon resulted in the deaths of approximately 790 sailors and the destruction of over 100 aircraft. The event led to significant improvements in U.S. Navy weather forecasting and heavy weather training to prevent similar disasters in the future.
