W.H. enlisted for the Civil War on August 11, 1862, in Vienna, IN, at the age of 23. He was a Private in Company K, 66th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, Infantry. William was discharged on June 14, 1865 at Washington, D.C. ∼ CHANUTE SUN, SEP 19, 1905 BURIED HERE TOMORROW--William Johnson, a former resident of Chanute, died at his home 2 miles west of Ridge yesterday and will be buried in Elmwood tomorrow afternoon. Funeral services will be held at Ridge Church tomorrow morning at 10. One of Johnson's sons, Grant, lives at Rest west of Chanute. Another son died in Chanute 5 years ago as the result of a Fourth of July celebration. A toy pistol caused lockjaw poisoning and the small child succumbed to the terrible affliction. The Johnsons moved from Chanute immediately after the death of their son.
