Bio

Horace D. "Cotton" Varnell, 79, of Rogersville, died Saturday, Dec. 3, at ECM Hospital. Visitation will be noon-2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at Rogersville Funeral Home, with the funeral service at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Hurricane Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Sherald Thornton, Jerry Weathers, Tony Davis, Zac Davis, John Thompson, Rocky Simpson, Tyler Davis and Spencer Thompson. Mr. Varnell was a member of the Baptist church and retired from Reynolds Aluminum after 43 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Susie Varnell; stepmother, Pearl Varnell; nephews, Barry Morrison and Larry Thornton; brothers, Billy and Rink Varnell; and a sister, Slettie Gibson Varnell. He is survived by his sisters, Carolyn (Sherald) Thornton, and Linda (Clinton -- "Preacher") Flanagan, both of Rogersville; a brother, Duel Varnell, of Rogersville; special nieces, Teresa Davis, Renee Thompson, Barbara Ullery and Tammy Simpson; four nephews, four great-nephews and three great-nieces.
