By using the 1830 census you could say Jefferson's father is William Johnson but in fact, (due to common names factor) Jefferson's (b. 1809) parents have not been ascertained for certain nevertheless we know of several brothers. They were; Charles (Charley) Johnson born c1795, Thomas (Old Tom) Johnson b 1800, William (Bill) Johnson born c1803, Calvin Johnson born circa 1805, Isaac (Ike) Johnson born c1807, and Madison Johnson born c1812. Jefferson named one son John Martin because of his love of their home on Martin Creek, Putnam/Jackson co. (line) Tennessee. If you went to find the old homestead today you would find it in Putnam County. The home site is up Little Puncheon Camp Waters a tributary on the north side of Martin Creek. It was located in a "narrow valley (known locally as hollows) called Dungeon Hollow between ridges separating Martin Creek and Flynn's Creek. The home site can be reached by taking the Ben Birdwell Lane road or the Dyer Cemetery Lane road off of State Road 290 traveling west from State Road 56. Thomas Johnson had 25 acres surveyed that was located on near Little Puncheon Camp Waters of Martin Creek on the north side of the creek. The 25 acres included "Johnson's improvements, spring, and a house occupied by William Johnson." The Platt Survey was not recorded until six years later July 13, 1832. Jefferson and Madison Johnson who witnessed the deed were Old Tom's brothers. Who was the William Johnson mentioned in this deed? Probably it was Old Tom's brother William but there is always the possibility that he was Tom's father. A family story was that the family was moving to Missouri when William Johnson (the younger) drowned crossing a swollen stream so the family turned back. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5549228/person/794306234 Jefferson born Dec. 3, 1809. Nancy Clemens born Nov. 21, 1810. Jefferson died May 20, 1886 and Nancy in 1883. Oral history says, Jefferson Johnson was involved in a duel in Jackson co., Tennessee and that is why he came to Putnam County, Missouri. Jefferson and Nancy left Tennessee in 1837 after John Martin was born. Two more were born during their stay in Kentucky. They arrived in Missouri in 1842, locating in Putnam Co. (Elm Township), where they soon entered land and reared their family, all living to maturity. Seven of the sons served in the Federal Service, five of them being in the regular army. The family all reside in Putnam Co. there being eight sons and 4 daughters (1 child deceased) Issue of Jefferson and Nancy (Clemmons) Johnson Calvin 29 Sep 1830 Jackson co., TN/d. 29 Jun Terell, Kaufman, TX - m.
