Curtis Wilbur Roper, son of Theodore and Rhoda Roper, was born at Alexandria, Neb., January 4, 1897. Prior to his father's early death in 1906, the family lived in several mid-western states. Curtis and his mother settled near Ohiowa, where he grew to manhood. Here he received his formal education and attended Sunday school and church. After working in several different capacities, farmer, ranch hand, a policeman on the Lincoln police force and a guard at the men's reformatory, he met and was married to Alta M. Avery in 1927. Together they made their home on the farm near Fairmont, where he lived until his death. To this union were born three sons, Delvin, now of Edgar, Duaine, now of Englewood, Col., and Marvin of Fairmont. Curtis was active in several community activities, holding offices on the school board of District No. 15 and as a steward on the official board of Grace Methodist church. After a brief illness, he passed away at the York hospital January 6, 1961, at the age of 64 years and 2 days. Death was due to a heart attack. He is survived by his wife, Alta; his three sons; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Carrie Avery; two daughters-in-law, Carolyn and Geraldine; two brothers, Charles of Pasco, Washington and Vernon of Derby , Colorado; two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Forney of Laramie, Wyo., and Mrs. Alice Brown of Presho, S.D.; two grandsons, Marcus and Timothy; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. As a friend, he was true as the best of steel, and as a neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand and as a citizen, was counted among the stalwarts. Funeral services were held at the Fairmont Methodist church with a former minister, Rev. Norman Smitheram of Lincoln, officiating. Interment was in the Fairmont Cemetery.
