Daughter of Tommie Kitchens and Mamie Westberry. Shirley (Kitchens) Farmer Bishop, 74, passed away at her home near Avalon on Jan. 23, 2010 surrounded by her family. Shirley was born in Italy, Texas on Jan. 10, 1936 to Tommie and Mamie (Westberry) Kitchens. She has lived most of her life in Ellis County and attended school in Bardwell. On October 22, 1952 she was married to Curtis Farmer of Bardwell and they made their home in Bardwell for over thirty years. Shirley and Curtis owned and operated Farmers Grocery Store in Bardwell for more than twenty-five years where they sold groceries, bait and tackle, served hot plate lunches, fresh baked cakes and pies, and always a fresh pot of coffee and a warm welcome for friends and strangers alike. Shirley enjoyed being a homemaker and was a perfectionist with sewing, needlepoint, crafts and hobbies. Her family has said many times that her house was so clean they could eat off her floors. Shirley also enjoyed outdoor activities including camping with family and friends and spending time at the deer lease in South Texas. She loved her family and friends and enjoyed telling stories and pulling practical jokes for laughter and good times. Shirley loved the Lord and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Ennis. Shirley later married Billy Bishop on April 12, 1999 and they made their home in Ennis. She is survived by three sons: Ronald (Ronnie) Lynn Farmer and his wife, Linda, Randy Lee Farmer and Richard (Ricky) Farmer and his wife, Lisa, all of Avalon; six grandchildren: Ronna, Melody, Jennifer, Jessica, Curtis and Clayton; five step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters: Joy and her husband, Milton Dlabaj of Streetman and Patsy Bozek of Ennis; two brothers, Curtis Kitchens and Jerry Kitchens and his wife, Terry, of Ennis; one sister-in-law, Martha Kitchens of Ennis: two step-children; Carolyn and her husband, Don Greer of Ennis and Paul Bishop and his wife, Mary, of Ennis. Shirley is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her husbands Curtis Farmer on Sept. 24, 1995 and Billy Bishop on Sept. 29, 2004, her parents, Tommie and Mamie Kitchens and one brother, Thomas Kitchens. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at J.E. Keever Mortuary. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Larry Poarch and Rev. Ken Cashion officiating. Pallbearers will be Bill Dyess, Raymond Armstrong, Jerry Wilson, Joe Wilson, Bob Beakley, Todd Kitchens, Gary Farmer and David Rankin. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kenneth Farmer, Johnny Rankin, Mackie McKennon, Junior Lowry and Tony Birchett. Interment will follow at Elm Branch Cemetery in Bardwell, Texas under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. Ennis Daily News 27 Jan 2010
