Bio

Floyd Leland Shipman, the son of Sherman and Nora (Redden) Shipman, was born May 37, 1912 in Webster County, Nebraska. He departed this life unexpectedly at his home in Guide Rock on Sunday June 27, 1993 at the age of 81 years and 1 month. Jake, as he was affectionately known by family and friends, was raised in the Garfield community in Webster County. He received his formal education attending the Garfield school. He then moved to Leadville, Colorado where he was employed with the Climax Mining Company, which was a molybdenum mine. On May 24, 1937 Jake was united in marriage with Edythe Coral Greenhalgh at Leadville. This union was blessed with four children, James, Marlos, Dennis and Jacque. They later returned to Webster County and made their home south of Guide Rock where Jake farmed. He loved the time he spent working the soil and raising his livestock. Following his retirement, Jake and Edythe moved into town to live. Jake's personality was pervaded by his gracious temperament and a friendly disposition. He always looked forward to having coffee with his friends downtown and trading stories. In his leisure time he relaxed by tracking all the various farm activities and watching and predicting the weather. He took pride in his yard and enjoyed working in his garden. His greatest love and enthusiasm in life was for his family and farm. He was a fun loving grandfather and especially looked forward to the time spent with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Guide Rock Masonic Lodge #128 A.F. & A.M., he had served as a volunteer fireman and one the Guide Rock Rural Fire Board. He was preceded in death by his parents Sherman and Nora Shipman; two granddaughters Rhonda McNichols and Melissa Hajny, and two sisters Opal Harris and Marvel Howell.
