Bio

Hazel V. Koch, 96, of Lebanon, Kansas died Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Downs, Kansas. Hazel V. Koch was born to Sherman and Nora (Redden) Shipman, March 9, 1919 in Webster County, Garfield area near Guide Rock, Nebraska. She departed this life on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Downs, Kansas. Hazel completed her high school education in 1937, from Red Cloud, Nebraska. After graduation Hazel worked various jobs at the Red Cloud courthouse and the Eckley Cafe. She was united in marriage with William "Bill" Koch of Lebanon, Kansas on Mary 18, 1940 at Kearney, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm in the Independence community near Lebanon. This union was blessed with a son, William Gary Koch. Homemaking and being a farm wife was her lifelong occupation, with family being her main interest. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. They enjoyed going on picnics and playing games, Wa-hoo was always a favorite. Hazel loved gardening, mowing the yard, sewing and caring for the livestock. She was a devoted wife and mother who always gave her help with the chores. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed making pies for her friends and the restaurant of the U.S.A. Hazel was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in the Independence township, where she served as a Sunday school secretary and was treasurer of the Independence School Board for several years until closing. Hazel's membership was then transferred over to the Christian Church of Lebanon, Kansas where she was baptized and became a Deaconess. It was then, she became a member of the Over 60 Club. She was always willing to help until her health began to fail. Preceding her in death by her parents, husband, William "Bill"m, son William Gary, brothers, Elwin and Floyd Jake Shipman, four sisters Opal Harris, Emma Mullennex, Marvel Howel and Mildred Hansen. Left to cherish Hazel's memory are a daughter-in-law Dixie Koch of Downs, Kansas; grandson Garon Koch of Norton, Kansas; grandson Casey Koch of Concordia, Kansas who gave Hazel three great granddaughters: Kalissa Koch, Ashlynn Koch and Jaylen Green; granddaughter Keenya Tyler and husband Karlheinz, who grave her three great grandchildren, Shylan, Koby and Chauncie, along with two step- great grandchildren Kaleb and Karl-Heinz of Concordia, Kansas. Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Robert Hansen of Grand Island, Nebraska, endless nieces and nephews and a host of wonderful friends. Graveside services will be held Saturday, 2:00 p.m., March 28, 2015 at the Cedar Hill Cemetery with Pastor Kerry Hookstra officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud. Memorials are suggested to the Golden Living Center, the Christian Church of Downs, Kansas and the Cedar Hill Cemetery fund.
