Bio

Floyd Armstrong was born on June 11, 1909 to W.A. and Sarah McCleary Armstrong on the family farm in Lee Park in Custer County, Nebraska and passed away December 28, 1986 in Denton, Texas at the Denton Regional AMI Hospital at the age of 77. Floyd attended the Knight school on the southwest corner of the farm. He farmed with his father for several years. Floyd was married to Bernice Sherbeck on December 14, 1933 at Broken Bow, Nebraska. To this union four children were born. The majority of Floyd's time was spent farming except for the 10 years he spent in Portland, Oregon in the 1940's as a machinist for a steel plant. Floyd and Bernice retired in 1974 from the family farm where he had lived and farmed for a total of 52 years. They had lived in Arcadia for the past 12 years. They had spent several winters with their family in Texas. Floyd was a faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Arcadia. Floyd was interested and active in community affairs. He had served on the School Board of the Knight School for several years and six years on the Arcadia School Board. Floyd is survived by his wife Bernice of Arcadia; one son Melvin Armstrong of Lincoln, NE; two daughters, Janice Emery and Linda John of Argyle, Texas; three sisters, Dora Moody of Portland, Oregon, Hazel Harrison of Alameda, Calif., Martha Jameson of Scotia, New York. Floyd was preceeded in death by his parents, son Glenn and three brothers. Funeral services were held Friday, January 2, 1987 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Arcadia with Rev. Richard Roberts and Rev. Robert Pier officiating. The organist was Wanda Babcock and the singers were Vernon and June Babcock. Active pallbearers were Gaylord Slingsby, Alan Schmidt, Bryon Hunt, Charles Riggins, Rolen Sell, Ron Ritz. Honorary pallbearers were Chester Babcock, Sr., Arthur Pierson, Maurice Carver, Delbert Drake, Edgar Slingsby, Earl Leininger, Dennis Storms, Orin Kingston, Frank Wahl. Burial was in the Arcadia City Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Calvary Baptist Church Mission Fund or the American Heart Association. Ord Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
