Bio

Husband of Mary (Compton) Hewatt. The following has been submitted by Sandra Oliver Becker "ALEXANDER HEWATT WAS MY THIRD GREAT-GRANDFATHER" By Sandra Oliver Becker Alexander was born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina in 1797 son of John Hewatt and Elinder Forrester Hewatt. He was the brother of James Allen Hewitt, Richard Hewitt, Robert Armstrong Hewitt, John Hewett and William Forrester Hewitt. These relationships are verified: YDNA connects a descendant of his brother John Hewitt (d 1866 AL) with a descendant of Alexander, and a Hewitt male descendant of Rev. James Allen Hewitt. Autosomal DNA connects me, a descendant of Alexander to descendants of James and Elizabeth O'Sheal Hewitt. The Will of John Hewatt (died 1812) names children Richard, Robert and Alexander. Other children, William, John, and James, were not named in the will as they were married and had established their households. John only named his minor children to give them a good start in life. In 1820 Alexander was on the Spartanburg County, South Carolina census living next to his brother Richard's family and next to Richard Hewitt was Teresa aka Tracey O'Shields, who was the sister of Jethro O'Shields, the father of Elizabeth O'Shields Hewitt, wife of James Allen Hewitt. Alexander was married with children. The rest of Alexander's brothers are listed nearby on the same Spartanburg County, SC census. His brother John is shown on the Gwinnett County, Georgia census of 1820. John Hewitt married his first cousin Eleanor Baker, daughter of Christopher Baker and Agnes Forrester (sister of Elinder Forrester Hewatt). In 1830 John is listed on the Dekalb County, Georgia census with his wife and children. Between 1830 and 1836 the Alexander Hewatt family moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia where they joined Camp Creek Baptist Church. In 1836 they joined Friendship Baptist Church where in 1838 he was the church clerk. His family was on the 1840 Gwinnett County, Georgia Census. He was on the 1850 Gwinnett County, Georgia Census with his wife. In 1855, he was chosen as a Deacon in Friendship Baptist Church. He died in 1857 and is buried in the cemetery of Friendship Baptist Church in Snellville, Georgia. At many family reunions, the oldest Hewatt's would sit around talking about Alexander and his children. We children listened with rapt attention and learned a lot about our ancestors.
