The newspaper the Weekly Gwinnett Herald of Lawrenceville, GA published on 6 Nov 1883 had an obituary notice written by WD Almond who eulogized JB Hewatt (Joseph Benjamin Hewatt) who died 4 August 1883 and also the mother of JB Hewatt, as follows: "also Sister Mary Hewatt his mother who was born June 23, 1800 and died Oct 21st, 1883. Her decease was Yellow Jaundice. She has been a faithful member of the Primitive Baptist Church for almost sixty years, lived to a good old age and was a great Mother in Israel. I also visited her three or four weeks before her death and was cheerfully resigned to the will of God. She leaves one daughter, two sons, and many relatives and friends to mourn. The church lost two faithful members. Sister Hewatt died like one going to sleep." (WD Almond) NOTE: the tombstone has the year 1884 inscribed, but this obituary notice states 1883. Since the newpaper was printed Nov 6, 1883, the year 1883 would seem to be correct. The following was submitted by Sandra Oliver Becker "Mary Compton Hewatt" by Sandra Oliver Becker I have gone to the graves of my Hewatt ancestors in Gwinnett County, Georgia and seen the graves of my ancestors Mary Hewatt and her husband Alexander Hewatt. They have primitive stones of weathered concrete, tinged red from the North Georgia Clay of the cemetery. It appears that the only thing that their children could afford to have professionally etched on the stones are their names: A. Hewatt and Mary Hewatt. The rest of the lettering is crude as if drawn with a stick in wet concrete; the dates of their births and deaths. I have traced the lettering of these stones with my fingers, wondering who Mary Hewatt was. Family lore is full of details about the life of Alexander, but what about Mary. Mary's gravestone has the year 1884 inscribed for her death. She was my grandmother's great-grandmother. Close enough that she may have heard stories about Mary from her own grandfather, Mary's son. I longed to give Mary a name and a family. DNA came along and clues were discovered identifying that Mary was a Compton. The next time I go to Gwinnett County, Georgia for a Hewatt family reunion, I can place flowers on Mary's grave again and tell her that I now know who she is, and she will be remembered.
