Mrs. Smith died March 3, 2003, in an Athens nursing home. She was born Jan. 18, 1915, in Athens to Norman Joshua and Mary Janet Horn Cox. She had been a resident of Athens all her life, and a member of First Baptist Church in Athens since 1945. She was a volunteer at East Texas Medical Center hospital, a member of the Needlecraft Club and a member of the Genealogy Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband of 52 years, G.L. Smith. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Lottie Barrow and Lois Cox; brothers, Carl Cox, Roy Cox, Thurman Cox, Glenn Cox, Leonard Cox and Selman Cox. Survivors include son, Leslie "Pinky" Smith III of Athens; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet Lea and Larry Anders of Malakoff and Glenda Sue and Edward Bentley of Palestine; sister, Melverene Madson of Grandview, Wash.; brother, Norman Osborn Cox of Terrell; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, June McMichael of Athens. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Kenneth Sikes, Tony Sikes, Cody Bentley, Benny Brown, Colt Bentley and Joshua Smith.
