Ross Melvin Schwasinger (Mel) passed away on May 6, 2010 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Boise, Idaho at the age of 91 of causes incident to age. Mel was born to Franklin Matthew and Isabelle Catherine Parrot Schwasinger, on October 31, 1918, the ninth of eleven children. Mel grew up on the family farm north of Nampa. He attended Lone Tree School and graduated from Nampa High School in 1937. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp to serve in WWII. He flew 23 missions as a turret gunner and was shot down over Germany. He was a POW for 16 months in Stalag 17. He was released at the end of the war. One of his fondest memories of his release was meeting General Eisenhower who ordered that all released POWs get some milk to drink. After the war he returned to Nampa, ID where he helped on the farm. During his life he worked various jobs and then began his career in the floor covering business. He eventually owned Westside Floor Covering. Mel loved watching sports, spending time with his brothers and sisters, gardening and being outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mel met Laura Mae Christensen at a dance and they were married Sept. 2, 1947. He and Laura had 3 children, Cindy Joy, Kimberly Ann, and Randall James. Mel was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 19, 1962. Mel and Laura joyfully took their children to the Idaho Falls Temple to be sealed for time and all eternity on May 13, 1972. His wife Laura died April 23, 1995. Mel was an LDS Church volunteer at the VA Hospital where he spent thousands of hours providing blessings and comfort to VA Hospital patients. His friendly personality brought great comfort to those he visited each week. Melvin met E. Lavonna Gartin Latimer and they were married January 18, 1997. They enjoyed fishing together, traveling and loved being in each other's company. Mel enjoyed spending time with Lavonna‘s children, (Glenda, Stan and Keith), their spouses and their children. Melvin spent the last 2 1/2 years at the Idaho Veteran's Home and the Marquis Nursing Home where he received excellent care. Mel is survived by his sister, Naomi Schwasinger Lantz of Pennsylvania; his wife, Lavonna of Boise; children, Cindy McKay of Meridian, Kimberly (Keith) Douglass of Evanston, Wyoming, Randall (Shelly) Schwasinger of Boise; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
