Reuben Nathan Phillips is the son of Jonathan A. & Elizabeth Caroline (Nall) Phillips. ---------- Reuben Nathan Phillips moved from Georgia to Mississippi with his parents in 1847 where the family lived for a brief time, and moved on to the state of Louisiana. Here, his father, Johnathan Adams Phillips, was for some time engaged in school teaching, and later entered the mercantile business. He died of yellow fever in the fall of 1853. The widow and five children were cared for by their grandfather, Reuben Phillips, and soon moved to Shelby County, Texas, where they lived one year. The next year, they moved to Rusk County where they lived until the family grew up and scattered. While living near Mount Enterprise, Rusk County, the Civil War broke out, and Reuben Phillips entered the Confederate army as a Private in Walker's Texas Division where he served the last two and a half years of the war. At the end of the War, he returned to the home at Mt. Pleasant where he was married to Miss Terrissa T. Phillips on 31 January 1867. To this union, one child was born. Arthur A. Phillips. The home was broken when she preceded him in death. On 31 January 1872, he married Arabella M. Phillips, and to this union, five children were born - Joel John, Clark, Conrad, Willuell B. Phillips, and Arabella M. Phillips. Again, death entered the home and she preceded him in death. He married Mary Clara Shumate on 12 May 1882 and to this union, three children were born - Bertha M. Phillips, Bessie Phillips, and Jerry Phillips. Even this wife preceded him in death. He moved from Rusk County to Bosque County in the spring of 1883. Surviving are all the children except John Clark Phillips who preceded his father in death. Reuben Phillips was converted and joined the Methodist Church in early life and was a faithful member. He was for many years a steward of the church. Services were held in the Iredell Methodist Church where he had worshipped for many years. The school in Iredell dismissed so all could attend the funeral conducted by Rev. Wisdom of Hamilton. Surviving are his children - Joel Phillips, Conrad Phillips, Arthur Phillips, Jerry Phillips, Mrs. Willuell B. Henderson, Mrs. Bertha George, Mrs. Arabelle M. Beatty; one brother - J.C. Phillips; one sister - Mrs. Mary E. Phillips. Hico News Review January 27, 1933
