James Oscar Phillips was born 1 October 1907 in Sharp County, Arkansas. He was the oldest of the 6 children born to Walter Haynes Phillips (1868-1946) and Lillie Thompson Phillips (1884-1984). Siblings: Donald Henegar Phillips (1910-1997), Thomas W. Phillips (1913), Lois Phillips (1916), Louis Phillips (1916) and Roxie E. Phillips (1918). Both of his parents had been married before so he also had 4 half-brothers from his father's first marriage. Ira Phillips, Charley Phillips, Walter Phillips and Homer Phillips; also a half-brother and sister from his mother's first marriage, Hiram D. Pierce and Elva Pierce He served in the United States Navy during World War II. James was married to Edna Wolfe (1911-1991) 8 March 1949 in Sharp County, Arkansas. He died 7 May 1961 and was buried in the Evening Shade Cemetery in Sharp County, Arkansas.
