Asheville Citizen-Times - Jun 1929 AGED VETERAN IS CALLED BY DEATH Rites for 'Uncle Nick' Rogers tomorrow at Mountain View Funeral services for J.N.W. Rogers, 82, Confederate Veteran, and one of Buncombe counties oldest citizens, who died at the Mission Hospital yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock, will be conducted at the Mountain View Baptist Church, near Leicester, tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Rev J H Grice, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, west Asheville, will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons of the deceased as follows: Therron Briggs, Edmond Briggs, Wade Cole, Dan Foster, Thad Sluder, and Arville Sluder. Mr Rogers had been ill for several days, and after his condition failed to improve, he was removed from his home near Alexander, to the hospital. He would have been 83 years of age within two months and had lived in Buncombe county all his life. Surviving are seven children: Mrs D W Briggs of Asheville, Mrs J E Blackwell of Greenville, SC, Mrs Gaston Sluder of Alexander, Mrs Leona Foster of Leicester, Ernest Rogers of Camp Bragg, N C, L R Rogers of Youngstown, OH, and Mrs Frank Cole of Leicester. in addition to 59 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. Mr Rogers, who had lived near Alexander all his life, was known as 'Uncle Nick' by his many friends and was the father of 11 children, four of whom are dead.
