Bio
Ira was born in Robertson County, Texas and passed from this life at the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston after 3 days. He was a resident of Gilmer, Upshur County. He was predeceased by his parents, William Henry Henson of Tennessee and Mary Ann Williams of Texas and wife Carrie Myrtle Spruill Henson (1886-1918). He had two children with Miss Carrie Myrtle Spruill. Raymond Loyd Henson 1915-1984 and Lois Geraldine Henson Marsh 1917-2003. Ira left his children in Upshur county with his sister Mary Ann Henson Terrell to raise along with Carrie's orphaned sons Morris Bolin and Jesse C Turner. Mary had not children of her own. Ira left the Gilmer area and traveled 376 miles to Childress county and took residence with Myrtle Debman Odom who had 8 children. Myrtle's husband, Rayford Samuel Odom, had been convicted of an unspeakable crime against children in two counties on the 20th of May 1919. Incarcerated in Huntsville on the 20th of June 1919 to serve 129 years (2048). He died there on the 10th of July 1919 according to prison records. Raising another man's children was not in Ira's plan. He left Myrtle and headed to Harris County where he met divorcee Jessie Lee Lee Welch Chandler and they married in 1926. Jessie already had two sons, Wilson and Morris Chandler. You will not find Ira Dee Henson living with Jessie in any of the census records with whom he had six more children. He was found living with daughter Lois Marsh in the 1950 census in Gilmer as "separated" from wife along with his siter Mary Ann Henson Terrell that Lois was now caring for. Jessie's children, Bessie Mae Henson McGaffey 1927-2014, Thelma Fay Henson Sontag 1929-2024, Christine Joan Henson Brown 1931-1954 who died from childbirth complications, Frances Emergene Henson Beard born about 1933, Avanell Henson Kemmey 1935-2022 who was fostered by a Power's family, and Martha Henson born about 1938. Jessie died in Baytown in 1971. His children did well for themselves in spite of the hardships they must have faced as children. They were kind enough to give you a headstone and one for Carrie Myrtle which has the names of her children on her headstone.
