Bio

William E. Bratton was the 4th of the 9 children of Elijah Patton Bratton and Lucinda Fields. He was orphaned as a teenager, marries but dies at age 61 intestate and childless. However he owned several tracts of land, which his widow Mary inherited. William and his oldest brother Thomas J Bratton owned a saloon called "Bratton's Bar" in Honey Grove, Fannin County TX, by 1900. William's widow Mary outlives him by 27 years, never remarries, and leaves a will bequeathing one tract of land in Fannin County to "the siblings of William E. Bratton" . By this point all of William's siblings have passed away as well, and not all of their descendants have remained in close proximity. So a Declaration of Heirship lawsuit is filed in 1958 in the county court of Fannin County, Texas, Cause No. 4785, styled R.M. McCleary et al vs. Shella Bratton Landers, et al, to divide the proceeds from the sale of the tract among the heirs of William E. Bratton's siblings. The lawsuit file is approximately 100 pages, but a goldmine of genealogy information. The petition and affidavits establish the names of each of William's siblings as well as their children, listing names and county of residence, and what fraction of the sales interest each will inherit. Two of William's siblings, Kate and John, are described as deceased leaving no living children, meaning the proceeds are split 6 ways among the descendants of William's other six siblings. For example, William's sister Dora Miller, has 7 named living children. So Dora's daughter Jessie Lee White, is listed and receives 1/42nd of the sale proceeds [paragraph 16 of the lawsuit petition]. —————- William married Mary Ann "Mollie" Hamilton 27 Feb 1895 in Fannin County, TX, at the house of the bride's parents. The couple is found on the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Honeygrove, Fannin County TX census records.
