Bio

A S Whitson, Lutie Area Leader, Dies A S Whitson, a retired farmer of the Lutie community, died in Shamrock General Hospital at 1:25 pm Saturday, October 31.  He was 85. He was a patient in a Shamrock nursing center for about a year. Mr Whitson farmed at Lutie from young adulthood until he retired. Active in his community and church, some of his most effective work came during his tenure as a member of the Samnorwood School Board. He and his wife made it possible for their own children to have as much college education as they wanted and they encouraged other children to also set that goal. He was a member of the Wellington Church Christ. Al Stanley Whitson was born October 11, 1896 in Wiley, Alabama, the son of the late J M and Susan Gagley Whitson.   The family came to Collingsworth County in 1913, settling near Lutie.  He was married to Miss Olas Williams of Mobeetie on March 31, 1929, at Wheeler. Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm Monday at the Church of Christ, with Garell Forehand, minister, officiating.  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Guy Owens Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Walter Deger, Joe Frank Knoll, John Simpson, Selba Rainey, Marvin Knoll and Troy Gene Thomason. Surviving Mr. Whitson are his wife, Mrs. Olas Whitson of Lutie; two sons, Wayne Whitson of Lubbock and Tom Whitson of Amarillo; three daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Baldwin of Kermit, Mrs. Doris Billingsley of Plainview, and Laura Whitson of Abilene; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Stanley of Lubbock; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dr. Sue  Margaret Pollard. The Wellington Leader Thursday, November 5, 1961
