Province Brandenburg, Germany. His family immigrated to Texas in 1873. Three of his brothers (Fred, John and Christian) were already living in Texas. He was married three times and reared 18 children. Seven of these children preceded him in death. He was one of the first members of the Salem Church located in the Birch Community. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife Emma (nee Zwahs), seven sons (Albert, Fred, Bernard, Walter, Herman, Ernest and Willie), four daughters (Ida, Alvina, Emma and Anna), two brothers (Christoph and Henry), one sister (Alvina Benn) and 19 grandchildren.
