Pauline was the 3rd of 13 children of Mathias Merckle and Elizabeth ([Von] Holsworth) Merckle. OBITUARY: Mrs. R. E. Garden Mrs. Garden was born on December 27, 1869 in Munroe county, Ohio, and answered the call to her eternal home early on the morning of October 11, 1940. She came to Augusta with her family in 1917 from Sardis, Ohio, and has since made this her home. Her husband, R. E. Garden, who died in January 1938, was in the oil drilling business. Mrs. Garden's main interest was in her family, her home and her beautiful lawn and flowers. Her beautiful home with its lawn and flowers was one to cause the heart of any Augusta to beat with high pride. But all these were only the symbolic expressions of the beauty of her personal life. She was a beautiful Christian character who like her Lord, went about doing good. She was a loyal, zealous member of the Methodist church to which institution she was ever ready to spend and be spent. She loved her Lord and His Church. Surviving this good woman and mother are her two daughters: Mrs. Glenn Strong, Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. C. W. Hess, Hutchinson; three sons: Jock of Hutchinson, Robert, jr. of Nickerson and Audrey of Los Angeles, Calif.; five brothers: G. W. Merkle, Nickerson, Fred Merkle, of Sardis, Ohio, Charles Merkle of Kokomo, Ind., Ed Merkle, Hollistown, Md., and Esby Merkle, Lewisburg, W. Va.; four sisters: Mrs. John Muter, Grifton, W. Va., Mrs. Amy Gregory, Clarksburg, W. Va., Mrs. Gertrude Lowe, Paden City, W. Va.; and Mrs Catherine Bower, New Martinsville, W. Va.; one niece, Mrs. Elizabeth Nieman, Sardis, Ohio; ten grandchildren, and friends numbered by her acquaintances. A mixed quartet composed of Mesdames Peckham and Robinson and Messrs. Cash and Grimes sang three appropriate hymns. The pastor of the Methodist church brought a comforting message from John the 14th chapter, and paid tribute to the departed. Interment was made in the Elmwood cemetery by the Dunsford Funeral home.
