(auto accident) Hope Held For Women Hurt In Wink Car Crash WINK, Nov. 18.---Two women, seriously injured in an automobile crash that killed two women Sunday morning early, were given "fair chance" to recover by attending physicians today. The injured women, Mrs. Ruth Johnson and Mrs. Lucille Smith, both of Wink, are suffering in- ternal as well as bone injuries. Cal Jennings, Wink, suffered a broken back in the accident. Killed in the collision that oc- curred at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, 12 miles south of Wink on the Pyote highway, were Audrey D. Gardner, 36, of Hutchinson, Kas., and Jack Smith, 45, Wink. Both were kil- led instantly. The machine, driven by Gard- ner, struck the parked car occu- pied by Smith, Jennings, and Red Pearson, who received slight in- juries, according to Steve Mason, who had just stepped from the parked car. The speedometer on the instrument board was stop- ped at 80 miles an hour, it was said. Both cars were demolished. The injured women were riding with Gardner, who apparently did not see the parked automobile, Mason, a Wink undertaker, said. Smith, estranged husband of Mrs. Smith, was in the rear seat of the parked car. Gardner, of a wealthy Kansas family, had been in Wink for two months working as an oil driller for A. H. Flagherty of Midland. A brother, Jack, arrived from Hutchinson by plane Sunday night. The body was sent to Augusta, Kas., for burial tomor- row. Survivors include his divorced wife and a son, Robert, 16; anoth- er brother, R. E. of Hutchinson, and two sisters, Mrs. Jeanette Strong of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Betty Hess of Hutchinson. Funeral arrangements for Smith who is survived by three small children, were not complete to- day.
