Bio
The Wellington Leader July 31, 1975 John W. Powell, retired Collingsworth County farmer and rancher, died early Tuesday morning, July 29, 1975 at Thomas Nursing Center after a long illness. Powell was born July 26, 1893 in Bell County, Texas. He was the son of the late Henry J. and Rosa Newton Powell. He came to this area when he was nine years old. On August 20, 1919 he married Mora Smith at Arlie, Texas. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Lonnie J. Whitten of Wellington and Mrs. E.G. Hammett of Hereford; four sons, P.H. Powell of Pasadena, Texas, Bruce E. Powell of San Jose, California, Neil H. Powell of Tulia, and Clyde W. Powell of Shamrock; one brother Ben Powell of Irving: four sisters, Mrs. Agnes Comer of Colorado Springs, CO, Mrs, Walter Milton of Irving, Mrs. Doc Collins of Dodson, 27 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
