Louie R. Gustin, 77 years old and a resident of Idaho Falls, passed away at 10:41 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls after complications from surgery on a broken leg. He was born Aug. 21, 1924, in Moscow. He enlisted in the service and graduated with a GED through the military. He had been in three branches of service, Army, Navy and Coast Guard. At one time, he was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, and also drove tanks through the streets of Germany. He married May A. Stanfield in 1944. They later divorced. He worked for the Corps of Engineers out of Walla Walla. He also was a guard at the Walla Walla State Penitentiary and had his own private investigative agency. He worked at Shopko in Idaho Falls in his retiring years. He loved playing the electric guitar and accordion in a small band and was a very avid horseshoe player in tournaments. He loved to fly airplanes, had his pilot's license and was always building small aircraft with friends. He loved fishing. Louie is survived by one daughter, Kay Hanchett, married to Gary Hanchett of Lewiston; one son, Lanny Gustin, married to Joyce Gustin of Pullman; granddaughter, Kim Copenhaver and husband, Shane; and great-grandchildren, Chase and Taylor May, who was just born April 28, 10 hours after her great-grandfather passed on. They are all from Milton-Freewater, Ore. Also surviving are a granddaughter, Wendy Breeding and husband, Brad, and two children, Michael and Courtney Ann, all of Milton-Freewater; a grandson, Chad Rogers and wife, Susan, from Hanover, Md.; one granddaughter, Jamie Gilmore and husband, Stacy, and two children, Spencer and Randi, of Pasco; a granddaughter, Charleen Gustin of Pullman; one sister, Loretta Vandorn and her husband; and several nieces and nephews of Tacoma. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Gustin, in 1974 and his mother, Rose Gustin, in 1998. The graveside service is at 11 a.m. Thursday at the M oscow Cemetery with Rick Parsons of the Impact Church of Moscow officiating. The Lewiston Tribune (Lewiston, ID) 30 Apr 2002
