Anderson-Ellis Cemetery has its roots in the community of Ellis Prairie, which was the Republic of Texas land grant #482 to Benjamin B. Ellis in 1839. Benjamin B. Ellis was one of the seven original commissioners appointed by the Texas State Legislature in 1850 to form Trinity County out of Houston County and to establish the county seat Sumpter. He and his wife Arrita Ellis, shares the same headstone in this cemetery. This headstone is under the same tree, where according to Anderson Family tradition, where several slaves are buried. The community of Ellis Prairie became Friday, Texas when the post office was established in 1902/3 by James F. Friday and his son.
