Bio

Daughter of Seth Samson and Eunice Hopkinson Decatur County Journal ~ April 6, l905 LUCY B. WILSON was born in the State of New York, February 5, l8l3, and died at her home near Van Wert, Iowa, March 27, l905, aged 92 years, l month and 22 days. She was married to DANIEL R. WILSON in Switzerland County,Indiana, May 4, l836, who died in January, l884. From Indiana they came to Missouri in l857, and to Decatur County, Iowa, in l86l where she has since made her home. Of her sons and daughters, the following survive her: JAMES, LEONARD, ELKANAH C., HARVEY O., ALBERT B. and MRS. ANGELINE STARR. Of her brothers and sisters, there are two remaining; REV. SETH SAMSON, of Van wert; and MRS. PHOEBE PRIEST, of Springfield, Ill. Four of her sons served in the Union Army during the war of the Rebellion. In her early girlhood years she was converted and united with the M.E.Church where she has continued one of its most valuable members. She was a remarkable strong character and her faculties were unusually preserved almost to the close of her life, when her mind became clouded. The end came quickly. Her religion was of a practical sort. She wanted to know and sought to inform herself, both from the Word of God and the best sources of religious information, so that she might do her duty intelligently. She loved her Lord and Savior with a pure heart fervently. With her hands she performed many a kindly service for others, and with her means was ready to further the Kingdom of her Redeemer. The high appreciation in which she was held both by the church and in the community in which she lived, was richly deserved. Her sisters of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society feel that their ranks are being drawn upon heavily, she being the third member called from labor to reward during the past year. At the time of our last quarterly meeting at Van Wert, Sister WILSON desired very much to be present and to receive the sacrament. Her wish was gratified, and it proved her last attendance at worship in the House of God. Wisely she gave her heart to God in early youth, and very few have been permitted to give such term of years in service of her Master. How rich must her inheritance be among all them that are sanctified. What a crown of glory that fadeth not away. She rests from her labors and her works do follow her. Her funeral took place in the M.E. Church in Van Wert, the writer preaching from Phil. l:2l, assisted by Rev. Wm. Brown, after which her remains were laid to rest in Van Wert Cemetery. Servant of God, well done! Thy glorious warfare's past; The battle's fought, the race is won, And thou art crowned at last. In condescending love, Thy ceaseless prayer he heard; And bade thee suddenly remove To thy complete reward. O happy, happy soul! In ecstacies of praise, Long as eternal ages roll, Thou seest thy Savior's face. REV. TENNANT. Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert September 5, 200l
