Married Marie Zak __________ There were other Coufal families in the Bruno, Nebraska area, so a Coufal from Bruno does not mean the person is a descendant of Karel and Marie. Karel had an older married brother Fred and family that also came to Bruno, Butler County, Nebraska at the same time as Karel and Marie. In the 1880 census Karel is listed as Charles and Marie as Mary. In the census notice that both Fred and Karel named a son Leopold. In 1880 there appears to have been two other Coufal families in Butler County but neither at or near Bruno. Thank you for reading about Karel. For about two generations the Czech people spoke Czech and not English. From 1900 - 1920 many of the adult Czechs spoke only Czech. The big change occurred from Czech to English between 1920 and 1940. The older generation that only spoke Czech died off leaving those adults that spoke Czech and English. My guess is Karel really could not speak much English since he died in 1926 and his wife Marie probably got to the place she could understand some English because of all the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
