Henry Nauert was a Staff Sergeant in World War II with the Eighth Air Force. He trained as an aircraft and engine mechanic, serving with the 392nd Bombardment Group and was cited for distinguished and exceptionally outstanding performance of duty. The Eighth Air Force was the worlds mightiest strategic bombing force. Its personnel of 185,000 was the equivalent of twelve infantry divisions. It could sent 21,000 airmen in 2,000 four engine bombers and 1,000 fighters over Germany at one time. A combat mission made possible only through the support of tens of thousands of nonflying specialists. The 392nd Bombardment Group (H) is cited for outstanding performance of duty in combat from September 9, 1943, to June 6, 1944. Attacking during this period, fifty-five targets in Germany, and forty-five targets in occupied territories.
