Bio

Walter J. "Doc" Kubala passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, August 2, at home in Eureka at the age of 77. He was born on November 25, 1928 in Ennis, Texas. Walter was the son of Dr. Joseph and Agnes Nemecek Kubala. Walter spent the majority of his early years in the town of West, Texas. Shortly after graduating from West High School, Walter joined the U.S. Army. He served his country during the Korean War with "the Thunderbirds" Headquarter Company, 2nd Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment Combat Team. Walter was a Sergeant in "the Thunderbirds," along with Dan Blocker, who starred as "Hoss" on the TV show "Bonanza," and Buddy Ryan, who coached the NFL's Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles. After the war, Walter enrolled at Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science in 1956. He worked for the family's business, Nemecek Brothers Meats, for a short time after graduation before heading to Whittier, California and taking a position with Rath Packing Company. Walter eventually saw an ad for a meat inspector, passed all of the necessary requirements, and was sent to Eureka in 1961 to work with Langer and Kretner Meat Company. Walter spent his career employed as both a state and federal government meat inspector with the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service, retiring in 1995 while working with Redwood Meat Company. His hobbies were socializing and attending sporting events. He usually could be found at a local youth sports event, a Eureka High School sporting event, a Humboldt Eagles or Falcons baseball game, or a collegiate event at CR or HSU. If you knew Walter, you would know that he was usually going to approach you at the event and make you purchase tickets to the latest fundraiser that someone had him selling tickets for. He was a big fan of the San Francisco 49ers (especially during their Superbowl years), the San Francisco Giants, and the Texas Longhorns. Walter eventually got out of the fund-raising business and turned to "football pools." He was a great friend, husband, father, and grandpa and will be truly missed by all that knew him. All that knew him will have many memories of Walter that will make them laugh. He was a "one of a kind." Walter was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Rose Mary who passed away of polio at age 5. Walter is survived by his wife of 40 years, Tonie, whom he married in May of 1965; son, Mike Kubala and his wife, Elaine, of Eureka, CA; daughter, Patty Kubala of Eureka, CA; daughter, Michelle Fitch and husband, Tony, of Bakersfield, CA; daughter, Cindy Glavich and husband, Andrew, of Brentwood, CA; and son, Joe Kubala of Eureka, CA; grandchildren, Windy Wyatt of Texas, Mariha and Airin Wyatt of Bakersfield, CA, Logan and Crimson Fitch of Bakersfield, CA, Tyson Kubala of Eureka, CA, Jason Kubala and Marney Jeffries of Eureka, CA, Katie Kubala of Eureka, CA, and Gabrielle, Molly, and Carson Glavich of Brentwood, CA; great-grandchild, Peyton Kubala of Eureka, CA. At his request, no funeral services will be held. A memorial service will be held September 16, 1-4 PM, at the residence (per the 49ers schedule). Memorial contributions in his honor can be made to Humboldt State University Men's Basketball Program, Eureka High School Sports Program, Redwood Fields, P.O. Box 327, Cutten, CA 95534; or your favorite charity. Please sign the guestbook at www.time-standard.com, click on obituaries.
