Bio

Born in West Virginia in 1842, Mary Johnson married Samuel George Bell, 1825 Virginia, in about 1859. She appears on the 1860 census taken in Augusta County, Virginias as Mary J. Bell, a nineteen year old female married less than one year. She and Samuel moved to Missouri before their first child was born in February of 1861. Names and birth order of children born of their marriage are: 1. William Henry Bell , b: February 2, 1861 in Missouri 2. Nannie Elizabeth Bell , b: June 1863 in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Missouri 3. Ella M. Bell, b: 1865 in Missouri 4. James Lucien Bell , b: Feb 1867 in Adair County, Missouri 5. Lydia J. Bell, b: 1872 in Adair County, Missouri Mary Johnson Bell died in about 1875 or 1876 and the responsibility of housekeeping fell to eldest daughter, Nannie Elizabeth. Fortunately, a widowed aunt lived nearby and was able to help. I can find no record of Samuel having ever remarried. In the 1880 United States Census of Adair County, Missouri he is a fifty-four year old widower with five children. He is listed as a seventy-four year old widower living with son, James L. Bell in the 1900 United States Census of Webster County, Missouri.
