James Allen Spraberry, 90, of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Spraberry was a member of Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. He was born March 2, 1910, in Calhoun City, Miss., the son of James W. and Minnie Stewart Spraberry. Mr. Spraberry majored in soil science at Mississippi State University and graduated in 1938 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. He worked for the federal government for 34 years. In 1975 he retired as a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Sedimentation Research Laboratory in Oxford, Miss. He moved to this area in 1977. He was an avid reader and golfer, loved fishing and gardening and enjoyed all sports, his family said. Mr. Spraberry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha Barton Spraberry; two children, James B. Spraberry of Erwin and Nancy Hanna and her husband, C.J. Hanna Jr., of Elizabeth, W.Va.; and by his grandson, Anthony J. Hanna of Elizabeth. Four sisters, Beadie McKinnon, Modene McDonald, Lorene Sturdivant and Maggie Hollis, and four brothers, Lee Spraberry, Sim Spraberry, Dennis Spraberry and Clyde Spraberry, died earlier. The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, April 14, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary. The Rev. David McPherson and the Rev. Bob Gray will officiate. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Central Baptist Church, 130 Providence Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
