A 61-year-old Casa Grande woman was the first person to die in a city traffic accident this year when her vehicle was struck broadside Thursday by another auto at the intersection of North French Avenue and West 10th Street, Casa Grande police reported. Officers said Myrtle Whitfield, 200 S. Marshall St., died at Hoemako Hospital about 90 minutes after the accident. A spokesman for the hospital said Mrs. Whitfield suffered head injuries in the crash, but apparently died after suffering a heart attack. Services for Mrs. Whitfield will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Cole and Maud Mortuary chapel, 215 So. Washington St. Rev. Bob Cornelius will officiate. Mrs Whitfield, a 27-year resident of Casa Grande, was retired at the time of her death. She had worked for many years as a waitress in Dillard's Cafe, and later as a sales clerk at the Salvation Army store. She is survived by her husband, Lindsay Luther Whitfield, of Eufaula, OK, age 65; four sons; four daughters; and 26 grandchildren.
