George H. Zapalac, age 74, of Harrison, Arkansas, formerly of West, died on Wednesday evening, May 27, 1998 at his residence. A rosary was recited on June 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with the Rev. Melvin Dornak as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery near West. Mr. Zapalac was born on October 22, 1923, in Bruceville, the son of Henry and Emily Zapalac. He graduated from West High School and later went on to the University of Texas where he received a degree in Architecture. He served his country with the United States Navy during World War II. He married Beverly Klauser on June 25, 1956 in West. Mr. Zapalac was a well-known architect in the West area, having designed many buildings, such as West Community Hospital, St. Mary's School Annex, the old West Middle School, and several buildings at West High School. He worked as an architect for 40 years, known as Zapalac Architect, Inc. in Austin until he retired in 1996. He was a member of Rotary International in Harrison, Arkansas, K.J.T. Society and the Serra Club, both in Austin, and the American Institute of Architects. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Zapalac of Harrison, AR; two sons, George H. Zapalac, Jr. and his wife, Casandra of San Francisco, CA; and David A. Zapalac and his wife, Diana of Lake Stevens, WA; two daughters, Elaine Prouty and her husband, Dale of San Diego, CA; and Mary Ann Zapalac of Oakland, CA; one brother, Henry Zapalac, Jr. and his wife Mildred of Bryan; two sisters, Lillian M. Zapalac of West and Georgia Landkamer of North Mankato, MN; five grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers were Adolph Muska, Dr. Billy D. Pierce, John Cassidy, Richard Zapalac, Tommy Muska and Eddie Mazanec, Jr. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.
