Bernard J. Vanek, age 59, of West, passed away late Monday evening, Sept. 27 at Hillcrest Medical Center at West. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with the Rev. Henry Petter as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Vanek was born on March 13, 1940, in West, the son of Ben and Mary Vanek. He graduated from Itasca High School in 1958. He was a farmer in the Itasca area until his retirement in 1989. Bernard enjoyed working on antique cars and entering them in car shows, where he won many awards. He loved hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. He is preceded in death by his father, Ben L. Vanek, who died April 22, 1996. He is survived by his mother, Mary Vanek of West Rest Haven; two brothers, Johnny L. Vanek, and wife, Dorothy, of Waco and Al R. Vanek and wife, Elizabeth, of Sunnyvale; a twin sister, Bernice Petter, and husband, Alois, of Mesquite, ten nieces and nephews and thirteen great nieces and great nephews. Pallbearers were Randy Vanek, Greg Vanek, Pat Vanek, Darrell Petter, Ray Vanek and Paul Vanek. Honorary pallbearers were Dale Horn, Michael Hart, Price Clifford and Justin Dews.
