Harry J. Urbis, 63, of West, a longtime West businessman, died Tuesday morning, July 28, in a Temple hospital. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Monsignor George Doskocil as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mr. Urbis was born in West and lived in the area all his life. He was manager of Abbott Gin at Abbott from 1945 to 1961 and owned and operated West Gin Co. from 1961 to 1978. He married Rosalee Smajstrla in 1940. Mr. Urbis was also a member of the K.J.T. Society of Abbott, Knights of Columbus Council #2305 of West and St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy Air Corps. He was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include his wife; a son, Patrick Urbis of Corpus Christi; his mother, Mrs. Joe J. Urbis, Sr. of West; and two brothers, Joe J. Urbis and Johnny Urbis, both of Robstown. Pallbearers were Mark Urbis, Michael Urbis, Richard Urbis, David Urbis, Michael Smajstrla and Frank Cunningham.
