Bio

Henry Snyder, Retired West Merchant, Dies Henry J. (Pop) Snyder of West died at 8 p.m. Sunday Feb. 7 in a Waco hospital. He was 76. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Church of Assumption at West, Rev. J. T. Quilter officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. at Aderhold-Moore Chapel in West. "Pop" Snyder was born in McLennan County, raised in Leroy, lived in Elm Mott for many years, and in Waco before moving to West in 1946. However, he considered West his "only home." Before coming to West he farmed. Until recently he owned and operated a war surplus store in West, but he also claimed the trades of horse-trader and horse-breaker. He was well known as a member of the West Longhorn Club and an active booster of the West Rodeo. He missed only the last of the 13 annual shows held in West, due to failing health. For many years he drove the Longhorn Club chuck wagon in all parades which he loaded with as many children as the wagon would hold. For the past six years his love for children and horses took him to Camp Val Verde where he tended to the horses and taught many a youngster how to ride. Survivors are two daughters, Miss Mary Snyder of West and Mrs. Clementine Arthur of Japan; a brother, Lewis Snyder of Leroy; a sister, Mrs. Joe Podsednik of Dallas, and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were: Wilfred Karlik, Henry Popp, Elo Zatopek, Bill Arthur, Ernest Snyder and C. Kolacek. The West News, West, Texas, Vol. 69, No. 41, Ed. 1 , Friday, February 12, 1960
