Robert Joseph Shebesta, oldest son of Joseph and Jennie (Barta) Shebesta, left this life to join our mother at 8:25 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001. As per his wish, Robert died peacefully at home, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. A rosary was recited 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 11:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family received visitors from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. On September 27, 1913 (see daddy, I remembered!), Robert was born on the family farm in Telico. After Robert's birth, three sisters and three brothers followed. Later, the family moved to Ennis, where Robert grew up. He was a graduate of Ennis High School. He also attended Draughn's Business College in Dallas. During World War II, Robert enlisted in the United States Air Force, and eventually served as T. Sergeant. Near the end of the war, Robert made the romantic gesture of asking his mother, Jennie, to ask his girlfriend, Mary Sulak, for her hand in marriage. My grandmother must have been persuasive, because our parents were married on July 25, 1949. After living in Ennis a few years, the couple, along with their son, Joey, moved to West. Soon after, the Shebestas took over Mary's parent's cafe, Sulak's Cafe in West, and continued at the helm of it's operation for many years. Two more children were born, daughters, Ann and Katherine. He was a member of V.F.W. Post No. 4819 of West, Central and Southern Pacific Railroad Association, the Knights of Columbus in West and a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. His parents, as well as his sisters, Dorothy Shebeta Hunter and Lillian Shebesta Parma, and infant brother, William Edwin Shebesta preceded him in death. Robert was also preceded in death by his wife of almost 51 years, Mary Sulak Shebesta, on June 15, 2000. Survivors include his son, Joey Shebesta of Austin; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Bobby Busby of Austin and Katherine and Gary Vrba of West; grandchildren Josh, Maya and Gabe Shebesta of Austin, Tracy Busby of Austin, Jaime Bates of West and Jessica and Ryan Vrba of West; great-grandchildren, Zayn Busby-Marroquin of Austin and Collin Busby-Marek and Jacob Bates of West; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Marcella Shebesta of Fort Worth, Joe (Butch) and Adell Shebesta of Bardwell; a sister, Helen Branch of Pasadena; several nieces and nephews; and Lilyan Dvoracek, a family member and a second mom and grandmother to his children, and a devoted employee of Sulak's Cafe for almost 60 years. Daddy, you gave us one last look and reached your hand toward the heavens. We're sure Mama came to get you. We would like to gratefully acknowledge Hillcrest Community Hospice for their care, kindness and consideration towards daddy during these final weeks. Special heartfelt thanks goes to Jaime and Jessica for their expert nursing skills and to Collin and Jacob for the comic relief. Pallbearers were his grandchildren, Josh Shebesta, Maya Shebesta, Gabe Shebesta, Tracy Busby, Jaime Bates, Jessica Vrba and Ryan Vrba. "Gone fishin' with Wiley!" Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 111, No. 18, Edition 1, Thursday, May 3, 2001, page 5. Contributor: Betty Fajkus Marek (48445083)
