FORT WORTH - Jim Shebesta, born March 3, 1921, in Ennis passed away peacefully on his 97th birthday, Saturday, March 3, 2018. Jim grew up in Ennis. Jim was known affectionately as "Scrappy" by his Ennis High School football teammates for his relentless and never give up play. His tenacity and nickname followed him to Tulsa University where he played as running back on the 1943 Sugar Bowl team for the fourth ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricanes, against the seventh ranked Tennessee Volunteers. He was a pledged fraternity brother of Pi Kappa Alpha. Jim was then called to duty and served his country in World War II as a 1st officer in the US Navy. Following the war, Jim returned home to Cleburne, Texas, where he met his wife of 60 years, Marcella Alvena Dempwolf Shebesta who preceded his death on Feb. 14, 2011. Jim and Marcella raised six children together. Early on in his family life, Jim moved his family to Hobbs, N.M., where he was involved in the oil business and employed by Halliburton. Returning after several years there, the family relocated back to Fort Worth. Jim was a successful businessman who was the owner and operator of Shebesta Dry Cleaners located on 4839 Camp Bowie Blvd. Jim was a devout Catholic. He believed in a life of service to the Catholic Church and other philanthropic institutions. Jim and his family were a parishioner of St. Andrews for 50 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Union of Texas (KJT) of 75 years. In addition to his Catholic faith, Jim served alongside his wife for decades as a board member of EXPANCO, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit agency that provides vocational services to adults with severe disabilities as well. Founded in 1980, EXPANCO was one of Tarrant County's first programs designed to provide secure employment opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. William (Bill) Shebesta, his mentally challenged son, preceded Jim's death, worked at EXPANCO for over 30 years.
