TWO BOYS DROWN NEAR HERE SAT. 10-Year Old Dies In Attempt To Save Young Brother; Neither Able To Swim Elo Kolar, age 10, and a younger brother, Bennie, age 7, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Will Kolar of this community, were both drowned in a small stream near the farm home of the family, about nine miles east of this city, Saturday afternoon. The tragic accident occurred at about 3:15 o'clock as the boys were returning from a church social in the community with two companions, the small son and daughter of Frank Helonia, a neighbor. According to the Helonia children, Bennie, walking too close to the banks of the stream, slipped into the water. Despite warnings and pleas from his two companions, Elo jumped into the water in a heroic but futile effort to save his younger brother. Neither of the children could swim and according to the story of the boys' companions, both went under about the same time. The Helonia children ran to the Kolar home for aid and the boys' father took the bodies from the stream after they had been under water for some fifteen minutes. He rushed the children to this city where a vain attempt was made to revive them. Justice of the Peace Louis Garrison returned a verdict of accidental drowning. Funeral services for the two were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Catholic Church, Rev. E.J. Polcak officiating. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery. The tragic accident grieved this entire community and a large crowd attended the funeral services Sunday, an expression of sympathy for the bereaved relatives. Surviving are the parents and two brothers, Victor and Wesley, and two sisters, Lillie and Mary Ann, all at home.
