Abbott Youth Killed; 6 From West Injured in Highway Crash What was planned to be a happy weekend visit in Arlington with relatives turned into tragedy for three West and Abbott families last Saturday morning when Joe Edward Hajek, 16, of Abbott was killed in a highway accident nine miles north of Hillsboro. Also involved in the accident were Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Pavlas, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kaska and their sons, Laddie and Albert, The latter was still unconscious Thursday at Boyd Sanitarium in Hillsboro with head injuries suffered in the collision. All were passengers in a pick-up truck driven by Mr. Pavlas. Gene Richardson, driver of the other car, received only minor injuries. He is from Plainview. Riders in the Pavlas truck reported the Richardson car was trying to pass a slower moving car in the south-bound lane of Highway 81. He lost control of the car when he slammed on his brakes in an attempt to return to the proper lane. His car careened into the Pavlas truck during its snake-like slide to a stop and hurtled the truck and its occupants into a roadside embankment. The truck was a complete loss. Young Hajek suffered internal injuries and died en route to the hospital. He was a passenger in the rear portion of the truck with young Laddie Kaska and Albert Kaska, all of whom were thrown from the ill-fated truck. Kaska's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kaska, and sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Pavlas suffered cuts and bruises as they were trapped in the vehicle's cab. Twenty-four stitches were made to close a cut on Mr. Pavlas' temple. The group was en route to Arlington to visit the Kaska's son and brother, George Kaska, who just moved his family into a newly-bought home near the General Motors plant where he works. They were carrying some household furnishings in the truck. Mrs. George Kaska is a brother (sister) of young Hajek who was killed. The son of Arnold Hajek of Abbott, he was a student at Abbott High School. His fellow altar-boy buddies of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Abbott acted as pallbearers at his funeral Monday. Rosary was recited in West at Aderhold Chapel Sunday evening. Rev. W. Pechal officiated at the services. Survivors include his father; four brothers, William Hajek of Ft. Worth, Raymond Hajek of Midlothian, Albin Hajek of Massey and Arnold Hajek, Jr. of Fort Bliss; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Pustejovsky of Waco, Mrs. Anna Louise Kaska of Arlington and Miss Joan Hajek of Abbott.
