In 1780, she taught the neighbor women and girls how to fire a musket. After a surprise attack by the Tories on their home, Known as Fort Steele, there were four bullet holes in her clothing but she remained and aided her son, Cat. John Steele to escape with important papers. The Tories then burned her home to the ground. At another time, Capt. Steele is credited with saving the life of "The Swamp Fox" - Francis Marion. Adam made the trek from South Carolina through Kentucky and then to Indiana with his father, Robert, and brothers, Thomas and William as well as many other people. However, Adam and William decided to remain in Indiana. The 1850 census of Columbia Twn, Gibson county shows Adam and Catherine living apparently with son Elijah (age 26) and Mary Jane (age 27). Mary Jane was born in Kentucky. Elijah was born in Indiana. Also at this residence was Quincy A. (age 18). Children listed are Polly A. Hannah (age 9), Wm. A. (age 4) and Margaret C. (age 1). All These children were born in Indiana. Quincy owned $100.00 of property. Elijah owned $500.00 of property. The adjoining property was owned by a William Harper, age 55 and Margaret, age 54. A child is listed as Martha McDaniel, age 10. William's property was valued at $250.00. Grandfather Harper's journal says his uncle, William (brother to Thomas) never married. So this William probably is Adam's son. A William is buried in the Morton Cemetary where Adam is buried, whose birthdate is listed as Oct. 30, 1786 and death date is Aug. 29, 1861. This William could be a brother to Adam and Thomas. Other tombstones in Morton Cemetary, Gibson County, are: John B. Harper b. Dec. 6, 1813 d. Feb 12, 1847 Margaret Harper b. May 18, 1755 d.
