Centenarian, Benedict Nicholas "Ben" Kirchen departed this life and entered The Eternal Home on July 8, 2005 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. Ben was 101 years of age having been born on June 15, 1904 in Adams County, near Juniata, Nebraska to John P. "Jim" & Susan M. (Goedert) Kirchen. He grew up on his parents' farm in Juniata and moved to Hastings to attend business college after graduating from high school. Ben continued to live in Hastings for the rest of his life. Ben graduated from Roseland High School in 1923. Following high school, Ben attended Hastings Business College for two years and completed his business studies in 1925. He was an accountant for Paxton & Gallagher Co. & Hide Enterprises for 30 plus years, retiring in 1978. Ben married Madge Fye on June 13, 1925 and they had two children -- Kenneth, born in 1926, and Zelma, born in 1928. Ben and Madge divorced in 1935. (Madge died in 1989.) Then Ben married Pauline Wagner in 1939. Pauline preceded him in death in 1974. In 1990 he married Erma Kimminau in St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Hastings, Nebraska. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles both of Hastings, Nebraska. At the time of his death, Ben's survivors were his wife, Erma Kirchen of Hastings, Nebraska; Son & Daughter-in-law: Kenneth Vincent & Ruth Kirchen of Oceanside, California; Daughter: Zelma E. Selix of Torrance, California, two granddaughters, and many friends and relatives.
